Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Pack 3143
- What is a pack and den?
A pack is the whole group of boys (1st thru 5th grades) and consists of multiple dens.
A den is a group of 6-10 boys who are all the same grade in school.
Dens have ranks: 1st grade are Tigers, 2nd are Wolves, 3rd are Bears, 4th are Webelos 1,
and 5th are Webelos 2.
- How often do we meet?
The pack meets once a month from 7-8pm at Johns Creek UMC, usually on the 3rd Tuesday of the month.
Dens meet usually once a month, though sometimes twice.
The den schedule is up to the parents and den leader to decide.
We also have several activities throughout the year – see our calendar for this year’s events.
- What is the deal with uniforms?
We have two kinds of uniforms.
- The “dress” uniform is called the field uniform or “Class A”. It is a Cub Scout shirt with insignia, a
neckerchief with slide, and a belt.
- The other uniform is called the activity uniform or “Class B”. It is simply a pack t-shirt.
- What is exactly included in the field uniform?
The field uniform consists of:
- A Cub Scout official shirt (blue for 1st-3rd grade, tan for 4th-5th grade/ Webelos)
- Pack 3143 number insignia
- Atlanta Area Council patch
- World Scouting Crest (purple circle patch)
- Den number patch
- Blue epaulets (for Webelos only)
- Neckerchief and slide
- Cub scout belt and buckle
- Scout hat
Cub scout shorts or pants are not worn by Pack 3143; we are a “waist-up” pack.
We also do not use the orange shirts for the Tiger (1st grade) year.
To see how to attach the patches, see the insignia guide on our website www.pack3143.org.
- Which uniform do we wear when?
Field uniforms are worn for:
- Pack meetings
- Blue and Gold Banquet
- All popcorn sales
- Scout Expo
- Pinewood Derby
- Year End Picnic
- Usually den meetings (ask your den leader)
Activity uniform is worn for:
- Campouts and hikes
- Big Trip
- Service Projects
- What exactly do we need to buy for new scouts?
The pack provides the following for new scouts as part of the dues:
- Pack t-shirt
- Handbook for their rank (Tiger/Wolf/Bear/etc)
- Neckerchief
- 3143 patch
Parents need to purchase:
- Cub Scout shirt and insignia listed before
- Belt and buckle
- Neckerchief Slide (maybe 2 – the boys often lose these)
- Hat
- Pack t-shirt for parents (optional)
- Where do I buy this stuff?
Unfortunately, we are not very near to a scout supply store. There are stores in Smyrna,
Morrow, Lawrenceville, and Covington.
Lawrenceville store
203 Swanson Drive
Lawrenceville, GA 30043
(770) 962-2105
Atlanta Area Council stores
Online store
An outdoors store directly across Ga-400 from the Outlet Mall in Dawsonville also has
scout uniforms.
- What are the responsibilities of the parents?
Parents are an integral part of the Cub Scout program. At least one parent must be with
the scout at almost all events. The only exceptions are 2nd grade and older boys at their
den meetings (at the den leader’s discretion), and certain events for Webelos scouts.
We are a volunteer run organization, and we expect every parent to chip in to do at least
a small job but hopefully a larger role if possible. The pack leadership will work with parents
early in the school year to find an appropriate area to help.
- Who are the leaders?
There are many adult leaders, but your scout will interface mostly with your den leader.
The cub master runs all pack meetings and activities. The committee chair is responsible for
the general operations of the pack, scheduling, and volunteer recruitment.
- What about safety?
Boy Scouts of America and Pack 3143 take safety very seriously. We require our leaders to
receive Youth Protection Training from the BSA and we follow its guidelines.
Some important rules include:
- No child sleeping in a tent with an adult who is not his parent
- “Two-deep” leadership – the boys are not alone with a single adult
- No use of pocketknives until 3rd grade and proper training and certification
- The pack does not go in the water except at a few council activities.
- What do I get for my pack dues of $65?
The $65 funds a t-shirt, neckerchief, handbook, dues to local and national scouting, pack
meetings, general pack funds, all award patches the boys receive, and Boys Life magazine.
